A TRAINING course for cricket umpires is being run in the village of Blean, near Canterbury, starting in November.

The course is being organised by the East Kent branch of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, whose membership district covers, the Canterbury, Thanet, Ashford, Deal and Dover areas.

Sessions will take place in Blean Village Hall on Thursdays running from November 4 to January 20, 2005, with a 7.30pm start each week. The cost is £30.

East Kent branch training officer Ken Amos says those attending the course would not necessarily have to sit the final exam but stressed that cricketers would definitely learn more about the laws of the game.

He added: “We’re not looking for people to go on and officiate at Test level and we certainly don’t push anyone into taking the exam. It’s meant to be an enjoyable learning process although I do think cricketers would find the course content useful to them.

“Most players find themselves having to stand in a game at some stage or other and those who attend the course will be better umpires for it.”
