DAVID MATHEWS hit four goals in two games as Canterbury Hockey Club’s men enjoyed improved fortunes at the weekend.
On Saturday, they drew 2-2 at home with East Grinstead in the Slazenger England League, a result which leaves them still second from bottom of the Premier Division.
Stewart Keir gave Canterbury an 18th minute lead, only for Jack Marfleet to equalise just before half time.
Mathews restored the advantage from a penalty corner soon after the interval, but Dave de Prez levelled matters five minutes later.
On Sunday, Mathews hit a hat-trick as Canterbury beat Premier Division rivals Guildford 6-2 in the fourth round of the England Hockey Men’s Cup at Polo Farm.
Canterbury were two up in four minutes, and five ahead by half time, with South African Olympic star Greg Nicol adding two to Mathews’ treble.
Matt Harper hit the sixth before Danny Hall pulled back two consolation goals for the visitors.
