Mel Clewlow's hopes of winning a medal ended in disappointment as Great Britain were held 0-0 by the United States in the Olympic women's hockey qualifying tournament in Beijing.
The Canterbury player-coach's team needed to win to stay in the competition, but produced a below par performance, conceding 11 penalty corners in the process.
The British girls struggled to make any impression in the game, but Kate Walsh saw her late penalty corner attempt saved by the American's goalkeeper Amy Trans, a former team-mate of Clewlow's at Canterbury.
They now play classification matches to determine their final placing in the group.
Another Canterbury player, South African Jen Wilson's campaign also ended disappointingly as they were beaten 5-2 by South Korea.
