Melvyn Curd changed his partner – but not the score nor result – as he and Nigel Hylands beat the weather and 55 rival pairs to win John Shepherd’s Captain’s Prize on Sunday with a towering 47 Stableford points.
A week earlier Curd had won the Canterbury Festival closing pairs event with son Sam and on Sunday, playing off a 90% handicap allowance of 19, he scored 33 of the total, including seven pars while Hylands (h12) chipped in with a birdie at the fifth and three pars in the four closing holes.
They won by two from Tony Wenham (h11) and Robert Hollidge (h10), who took second place on countback from Anthony Grove (h8) and Paul Stewart (h9) and fourth-placed Benji Heaton (h4) and Russ Stannard (h13).
Hylands said: "To be fair anything I did was a bit of a sideshow to Melvyn. We’ve been playing together for three or four years now and that’s the best round I have ever seen him put together.’’
Curd joked: "I’ve obviously going to become a pairs specialist because I can’t win anything on my own.’’
Keith Martin, Lee Tidy and Tony and Jonathan Warman scored nine birdies and nine pars for a net 55.87 off a combined 12.5% handicap of six shots to win club captain John Shepherd’s Martha’s Trust Invitational Texas Scramble on Saturday.
Russell Stannard holed a perfect 8 iron for an eagle at the 16th to win his first CGC competition in searing heat in Wednesday’s Men’s Stableford and then revealed he only entered by chance.
Russell (h16) also nailed a 20 foot putt for a birdie at the fifth as he scored 21 points on each nine to win by four from second placed George McKechnie (h22), David Lambourne (h19) and fourth-placed Danny Cooke (h2), in a field of 61.
Russell said: "It’s the first midweek Stableford I’ve entered because of work and I wasn’t going to enter this one either.
"But Hugh Burton saw I was down for a 7.10am start and asked if he could join me as he was wanted to play in it and I though,t if he’s entered I might as well too, so I reckon I owe him a drink.’’
Heather Hardy recovered from failing to score on the first three holes to win the Ladies’ McCormick Trophy and August Stableford.
Hardy (h22) then scored 35 points for the remaining 15 holes to win on countback from Alyson Wreford (h17).
Meanwhile, Stuart Wise won Ashford Golf Club’s Coville Cup on Sunday.
Wise carded a net 68, including seven pars and a couple of birdies, edging out the in-form Barry Beaney, who followed his Captain’s Day victory by finishing runner-up.
Third place went to Tommy Lockett, who beat Martin Breen on countback.
Yet again Jason Barnes fired the lowest gross with a two-under-par 69.
A good entry in the Veterans Mike O'Hara Trophy played in blistering heat resulted in a clear win for Nick O'Keefe.
His round of 81 accrued 41 points, three better than Andy Harrison, who beat Dave Allerton, and Alan Brebner, who both carded 37 points.
The ladies section staged their Macmillan Stableford tournament on Friday and Saturday and Mary Daly continued her excellent recent form her score of 36 points, a single point better than both Beryl Sutherland and Coralie Butcher.
