Sam Northeast wants to put his own stamp on Kent and has already begun plotting the club’s 2016 promotion assault.
Ashford-born Northeast, who turns 26 this month, said it felt ‘pretty good’ to have confirmed his full-time appointment as skipper on Wednesday and added: “I am pleased that we have the winter now to plan as captain – last year it was Keysey’s ship. It will be nice to put my own stamp on things.”
He added: “I plan on making sure everything is set here and that everything is happy at Kent and then see if I can’t get into some one-day tournaments – the Pakistan T20 league or something like that – and then maybe get some sun.”
Northeast is one of many Kent players set to travel the world in the coming months but his thoughts have already turned ahead to a successful start to the 2016 season next April.
He said: “Promotion is always on the agenda. That’s the aim at the start of every season and it will be no different next year.
“We want to come back from the winter better and more motivated. We want to hit the ground running, win our first two or three games and set our stall out, something we have not managed to do over the past couple of years. We have a point to prove in the Championship as well as one-day cricket. I take losing personally.”
In his new role as captain, Northeast will be directly involved in off-field discussions and he admitted “it would be extremely helpful” if Kent could draft in an overseas player next summer.
He added: “The vice-captaincy over the last year and a half has been a good insight into the running of the club – I have learned a lot about captaincy on and off the field.
“It has helped me a lot, not least dealing with Jamie Clifford, Graham Johnson and George Kennedy.
“We’ll discuss (the possibility of an overseas) as a club. There are no guarantees but it would be extremely helpful if we could. Fingers crossed.”
