Kent draw with Glamorgan in County Championship after rain wipes out most of day four at Canterbury

Rain thwarted returning Kent captain Sam Billings' attempts to force a positive result on against Glamorgan at Canterbury.

Both teams put in sporting declarations in a bid to contrive a run chase for the visitors on day four.

But rain which forced an early lunch ultimately saw the game abandoned as a draw early in the afternoon when play was unable to resume.

Glamorgan declared on their overnight score of 64-3 and Kent extended their lead of 243 by a further 60 runs for the loss of Ollie Robinson.

That left Glamorgan a target of 304 from 84 overs - a chase that could have gone either way had they managed to avoid the showers.

Kent declared on 60-1, the promoted Robinson departing for 14 after glancing Michael Neser down the leg side.

Jordan Cox finished 27 not out and Zak Crawley - in his last innings before the Test series with New Zealand - was 18 not out when the declaration came.

Glamorgan were 22-0 when there was a brief delay for rain. Once the teams swiftly returned, on-loan Essex bowler Matt Quinn removed David Lloyd, who dragged on for 17, but a second, heavier downpour led to an early lunch and with no prospect of the ground conditions improving, the sides agreed a draw at 1.45pm.

Kent collected 12 points and Glamorgan 11 points from the game.

Kent head coach Matt Walker said: “It’s something that’s drifted out of the game a little bit. It’s not something you tend to want to see too much in cricket, especially when you’ve got something throwing chuck-ups to hit 120 runs.

"We were 240 runs ahead going into this day, so then it’s just working out if you’ve got enough overs to bowl a side out and then to set up a run chase that’s fair, but also you always want to try and favour it a bit in your direction.

"We thought 300 off 80 was a pretty good equation, it gave us enough overs to bowl them out, but also a run rate or 3.4, or 3.3 which we thought was fair on what was probably a day two wicket.

“We could have played for bonus points, we could have tried to let the game take its natural course but taking 17 wickets in a day is tough. I think we just thought we need a game of cricket and we want try and win.

“It was something I spoke to Sam (Billings) about last night. He thought it was a positive thing to do. We spoke to their coach and their captain.

"Usually there’s a bit of negotiating going on when you go to a side with a target, but they were happy with it so it was fairly straightforward.

"It’s a shame because I think it would have been a really good game of cricket, whether you win or lose. Unfortunately the rain got the better of us again.”
