There was disappointment for Tom Ransley and the Great Britain men’s eight in the latest World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Ransley, the 30-year-old former King’s School (Canterbury) pupil, from Ashford claimed bronze in the new-look eight at the European Championships in Brendenburg last month, with the hosts claiming gold and Russia silver.

GB could not, however, repeat their podium finish in Sunday’s final, although they were missing double Olympic champion Pete Reed through injury, with Alan Sinclair his replacement.

All the Olympic-qualified eights took part, bar Poland.

Holland held on to take victory in 5min 28.56sec with runners-up Germany just ahead of the US.

GB were less than a second back in fourth in 5.31.47.

Ransley and team-mates Matt Gotrel, Scott Durant, Matt Langridge, Paul Bennet, Sinclair, Andrew Triggs Hodge, Will Satch and cox Phelan Hill, had produced a tactical race to qualify for the final, finishing third in 5.34.08 behind Holland (5.30.38) and Germany (5.30.51).

Ransley – who has also raced in a revamped GB four in the past year – will find out if he’s been selected for the Rio Olympics and if he retains his place in the eight, at Henley on Thames next Thursday (June 9).
