A Dave Read hat-trick in the last eight minutes was the highlight of Canterbury City's 7-0 win against Guru Nanak in Vandanel Kent County League Division 1 East on Saturday.
Although the visitors managed to keep the first half goalless, they never posed a real threat to the City defence in which under-18s keeper Luke Prentice played confidently and Dan Bonneywell made another successful appearance at left-back.
For 50 minutes, City’s three-strong strike force of Read, Wayne Fittall and Royston Gough could not turn countless chances into goals.
Eventually, Read laid on the opening goal for Gough to finish. Once that hurdle had been cleared, further goals followed. Guru Nanak contributed to their own downfall by giving away a penalty in the 57th minute for a trip on Scott Lawford, who slammed in the kick.
Gough added his second when Read played a high ball across the penalty area.
Despite being under pressure, Gough headed in at the far post.
Midfielder Calum McGeehan and winger Adam Woollcott were introduced and Woollcott’s second touch was a short centre that Fittall side-footed in.
Read capped a convincing victory with three well-struck goals, all within the final few minutes.
