Kent cricketer Martin Saggers got his 2009 benefit season under way with a New Year’s Day match between Hartley and a Saggers XI.

Watched by a crowd of almost 200, Hartley scored 130-5 from their 15 overs.

In reply, Saggers (eight) went cheaply before the benefit side fell 12 runs short of victory on 119-8.

Saggers officially launches his benefit year at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Hollingbourne, near Maidstone, on Friday January 30. Further details are available from benefit secretary Laura Collins on 01892 750131.
