SHAY SMITHSON of Canterbury Gymnastics Club won a gold medal at the South East Regional Championships in Guildford.

Smithson made a last-minute decision to switch from the novice to intermediate level, winning the 10 year boys’ event. Jonathan La was sixth, despite being injured while competing on the vault.

Eight youngsters represented the club with Maya Podamsee winning bronze in the eight year girls’ novice.

Kirsty Maguire finished fifth in the nine year girls’ intermediate, while Kiarna Smithson, competing in her first competition, was sixth in the 14-year girls’ novice.
