James Tredwell joked that new England skipper Eoin Morgan had to ‘drag him’ out of the England attack as he was ruining the game after the Kent spinner claimed three wickets in their opening Tour match Down Under.
The 32-year-old claimed 3-11 from a four-over spell in the clash with the ACT Invitational XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Monday, in which England cruised to a 216-run victory.
The Tourists amassed 364-6 from their 50 overs, with five batsman passing 50 and Chris Woakes adding 45 not out, before skittling the inexperienced Australian Capital Territory team for just 148 in reply inside 33 overs.
New Romney ace Tredwell was one of seven bowlers used but finished with the best figures by far, with his only disappointment that he was not able to go on and claim more scalps.
He said: “Sometimes it can be lovely to bowl (in Australia) and clearly that was the case today - a bit of turn and bounce can be quite nice. You just want to get into a position where you can bowl attackingly and that was the key today (after) a couple of early wickets.
“Unfortunately I had to be dragged out of the attack - (I was) ruining the game.”
He added: “We wanted to get everyone to get a decent runout and I had to be the one to give way - it’s one of those things.
“We got everyone a good go. Seven or eight batters got some good time in the middle and all the bowlers got a few overs under their belt so it is a good way to start the tour.
“I thought all the bowlers shaped up pretty well. It was a great way to get us going.”
The match was Eoin Morgan’s first as captain after replacing Alastair Cook as England one-day captain but Ashford-born Tredwell claimed: “It wasn’t a great deal different. We probably weren’t put under as much pressure today as we might be in some other games during the tour. There might be a time when we see some differences.”
England are back in action on Wednesday when they face a Prime Minister's XI in Canberra, two days before they face Australia in the opening game of an ODI tri-series also involving India at the SCG in Sydney.
