Kent captain James Tredwell couldn’t quite take the chance to make history for England as they suffered a narrow defeat in a rain-affected ICC Champion’s Trophy final against India at Edgbaston on Sunday.
Tredwell was included in the line-up in place of Graeme Swann for the third straight game, but was unable to record his fifth-straight win for his country, despite having the chance to win the match, and England's first Trophy, by hitting a six from the final delivery.
The spinner did make an impact as England won the toss and chose to field first, eventually taking the field after a six-hour rain delay for a match reduced to 20-overs aside.
Tredwell held the catch of in-form Shikhar Dhawan to reduce the Indians to 50-2 and four overs later caught MS Dhoni (0) to make it 66-5, with both wickets going to Ravi Bopara.
In between the catches, the 31-year-old collected his only wicket, having Dinesh Karthik (6), caught by Eoin Morgan.
Tredwell claimed 1-25 off his four overs to finish with 5/122 in four Trophy appearances and 8-173 in five one-dayers in England action this summer.
India eventually closed on a modest 129-7, however in reply England lost wickets regularly and only a 64-run fifth-wicket partnership between Morgan and Bopara kept England in the hunt for victory into the final three overs.
However 110-4 swiftly became 113-8 and brought Tredwell to the crease with eight balls remaining and England needing 17 runs to win.
The Kent man managed to amass five runs from his first three deliveries, however needing six for a win from the final delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin, the Kent man’s attempt to carve it away over midwicket did not make contact and India were left to celebrate.
