Ray Turner couldn’t hide his excitement as his Faversham side prepare for a potentially historic FA Cup trip to Horsham on Sunday afternoon.

The Lilywhites face their Ryman League, Division 1 South rivals at 3pm with a place in third qualifying round – a stage which Faversham have never before reached – and £4,500 at stake.

Manager Turner said: “It’s a big week for the club. It’s exciting for all of us and wouldn’t it be great for us to be in the next round and make a bit of history.”

Town face something of an injury crisis with Ashley Brown (hamstring), Aaron Lacy (hamstring), Toby Ashmore (calf) and Dan King (ankle) all needing to be assessed.

Turner admitted: “I have a lot of walking wounded but whatever team I put out, they’ll give it a right go.

“Why wouldn’t you want to play in a game like this? It’s a big occasion and who knows what might lie in the next round for you.”

Turner is hoping keeper Simon Overland recovers from sickness to line-up on Sunday, although defender James Peacock proved himself an able understudy during his 90 minutes in goal in a 0-0 draw against Whitstable on Tuesday night, writing himself into Salters Lane folklore with a fine penalty save.

Turner revealed: “I was at work on Tuesday morning and it was a nightmare. Simon was being violently ill, I had a second goalkeeper working nights, so I phoned PK (Peacock) and he volunteered.”

“I think stuff like (Peacock saving a penalty) is why football is so addictive. When you have strange nights like this, it just brings up scenarios like that.”

The point against Whitstable followed a 3-0 win over Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday – secured by a first-half own-goal and strikes from Jamie Maxted and Renford Tenyue after the break.
