Ray Turner says Faversham’s entire season boils down to Saturday’s game at East Grinstead.
The 7-0 demolition of Walton Casuals at the weekend had put Town’s play-off destiny back in their own hands but the shock 2-1 loss at Sittingbourne on Tuesday left them outside the top-five on goal difference with two games remaining.
Having suffered a 5-0 defeat in the Ryman League Cup final against Kingstonian, the previous Wednesday, Turner admitted: “It’s been an unbelievable week of highs and lows, even in the context of this turbulent season.”
He added: “It’s a massive test of a manager now. You have to try and be steady, I was told that early on. You can’t get too high when you win 7-0 or too low when you lose 5-0 in a cup final or in a game you’re expected to win.
“I had a gut feeling months ago that it would all come down to the Hythe game on the final day, and, after Tuesday, I’d take that.
“It’s vital to take it to the last game. History has shown us sides like Dover have sneaked into the play-offs on the last day and gone on to win them.
“We have to show character. The players have to do what they do best and respond.
“Sittingbourne were probably a little better than us, they were pumped up for the derby and we probably weren’t. It wasn’t until we were behind that we reacted.”
