YOUNGSTERS from eight primary schools revelled in the chance to play eight-a-side cricket under floodlights at Polo Farm at Canterbury.

The "Kwik Cricket World Cup" was organised by Canterbury Cricket Club in conjunction with the Kent Cricket Board and the city council’s sports development team.

St Peters won the final by nine runs, scoring 224 for two before restricting Barham to 215 for six. Parkside beat Briary in the third place play-off.

All those who took part received a trophy, and got to keep their playing shirt bearing their school’s name. Each school also received a Kwik cricket set.

Trophies were presented by Kent cricketer Amjad Khan, and Nigel Clarke, from sponsors, Robinson’s, the solicitors.

Bats autographed by the Kent squad were presented to the best players from each team. They were: Pilgrims Way, Daniel Dolman; Briary, Matthew Naylor; Parkside, Amy Baker; St Thomas’s, Favourite Frizell; Barham, Cordelia Edwards; St Peter’s, Michael Walsh; Chartham, Stephen Mayes; St Stephens, Daniel Wenman.

The tournament was specifically organised to help launch an under-11 section at Canterbury Cricket Club. They already run under-13 and under-15 teams and club nights for seniors and juniors will be run on Wednesday evenings, starting on April 16.

Further details about the junior section may be obtained from Russell Griffiths on 0788 152 4925.
