Assistant coach Matt Walker admits Kent have let themselves down in LV= County Championship, Division 2 this season and wants to use the final two games to show how good they can be.
Kent went into the season's penultimate clash at Glamorgan second-bottom with just three wins in 14 games but Walker targeted back-to-back wins in Cardiff and then at home to Gloucestershire from Monday to ensure the campaign finished on a high.
Walker admitted: “At this stage of the season, to be honest, motivation is not easy, with empty stands, early starts, September weather and nothing to play for in terms of promotion.
“You want players to be playing for pride and for the badge on the shirt. We have told them that they are still going out there to represent a great club and our fans.
“You rely on players to motivate themselves, whether that’s Matt Coles chasing 100 wickets for the season, Rob Key chasing more centuries and milestones, or someone like Sean Dickson wanting to make a name for himself.”
He added: “These last two games are important. We want to finish as high up the table as we can and just as importantly, we want to show people that we are a better red-ball side than we have probably shown this year.
“We can all agree that we have let ourselves down in the four-day game this season and we want to put that right and prove that we are capable of good performances.”
Walker said despite not having collected a win against Lancashire last time out at Canterbury, Kent had shown the ‘blueprint’ for future four-day success.
He said: “We batted first and scored 450-plus then bowled well and made the opposition follow-on. That has to be the blueprint for what we want to do that.
“OK, we didn’t get over the line on that occasion but more often than not, you’ll get results that way. That is the perfect recipe for success.”
