Weekend women's hockey round-up

THREE goals in eight minutes condemned Canterbury to their first Slazenger Premier Division defeat of the season at Old Loughtonians.

Jo Bryant gave the city side the lead after just eight minutes but a penalty stroke from Miranda Weeks six minutes later levelled proceedings.

Louise Jukes made it 2-1 just two minutes later and a Clare Appleton goal from a penalty corner a further six minutes later completed the scoring to hand the Essex club their first league win of the campaign.

Canterbury lie third in the division behind Bowdon and Slough who both boast 100 per cent records after four games.

Honours were even as Sevenoaks and Maidstone met in the National South Division on Saturday.

Maidstone had never lost to their derby rivals, but started poorly and found themselves two goals behind, after goals from Jet Van Zalen and Elizabeth Key.

Before the break Courtney Cummins pulled one back for Maidstone and the game ended 2-2 after when Rachel Thompson finished off a good team goal.

On Sunday Maidstone were back in action, this time against Horsham, and again found themselves two goals down.

This time though there was no fightback and the ladies ended with a 2-0 defeat.

Sevenoaks were beaten 4-1 on Sunday at Staines.

Kerry Maskery scored twice for the home side before Jacqui Ward pulled one back for the visitors.

A further two goals from Staines ended Sevenoaks’ hopes.
