Canterbury Ladies player-coach Jen Wilson says their superb win over hockey play-off rivals Surbiton will be meaningless if they cannot beat Investec National Premier Division strugglers Olton on Saturday.

The city club travel to the West Midlands on Saturday lunchtime seeking a return to the top as they face pointless Olton & West Warwicks while Reading, leaders and ahead of Canterbury only on goal difference, are facing big-guns Leicester.

Just four points separate the top-five in the table and Olton and next weekend’s opponents Clifton are the only two sides Canterbury are yet to face this season, with the potentially crucial return clash against Reading to come on November 24 at Polo Farm.

Wilson – whose comeback from a long-term back injury continued as she scored against Surbiton last time out – said: “We can only look one game at a time. Surbiton was a fantastic result and performance and we showed great passion and fight against tough opponents.

“Olton are struggling but we will go there focused on ourselves and repeating that kind of performance.”

Olton have conceded 52 goals in their opening seven games, scoring just four of their own.

Eliza Brett is the only absentee for the trip to Warwickshire.
