If you’re taking to the roads this winter, car preparation is essential.

No fewer than 12 million drivers in the UK will not bother to have their car checked before the onset of the cold season - potentially compromising safety and causing damage to their vehicles.

But carrying out simple pre-winter checks could save drivers £450 million, by avoiding breakdowns and damage to vehicles brought on by the cold weather.

"You need to protect your car, which is an investment.

"Being safe and well prepared for winter also protects other road users. If you haven't got good tyres then that is going to affect other road users."

In winter time, the most common parts to fail are wiper blades and light bulbs, but more serious faults can also develop with engines due to incorrect anti-freeze levels.

Drivers can carry out simple checks themselves on a regular basis to make sure their car has the right amount of oil, coolant, anti-freeze and screenwash fluid to make sure every journey is completed.

It is also important to check tyre pressures and tread depths.

Mr Zureiqi, of the RAC-approved dealer, added: "As winter is upon us, more and more people use it as an excellent time to upgrade their car.

"They are more likely to do so in the winter than they are in the summer.
