The festive fun just keeps on giving this week, as yet more Christmas attractions draw in the crowds. Jo Roberts reports.
The setting of Broadview Garden Centre at HADLOW COLLEGE, in 10 acres of gardens, is breathtaking all seasons round, but throughout December it’s a Christmas idyll. It has the festive experience wrapped up for those looking for something different and the tearoom will be serving seasonal treats. Late night opening takes place on Thursday, December 11, until 8pm. Experience the more unusual side to Christmas at DOVER CASTLE, with seasonal weekends running from Saturday, December 6, to Sunday, December 28. Two contrasting depictions of the festive season during the castle’s history will be recreated. In the Great Tower, it’s December 1184 and King Henry II and his court erupt into midwinter merrymaking. The king and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine preside over dancing, feasting, storytelling, games, music and singing: join the festivities with them around the roaring open fire. Meanwhile, in the Secret War Time Tunnels, a soldier recounts tales of a Tommy’s festive season and an austerity Christmas on the home front. A family ticket to the Great Tower at Christmas weekend event is £45.50. English Heritage members go free. Visit www.english-heritage.org.uk
LEEDS CASTLE visitors can experience a spectacular gingerbread-themed Christmas from Saturday, December 6, until Tuesday, December 23. A festive market, reindeer and a gingerbread quest across the gardens and grounds are just the start of it; the pinnacle is a two-metre-long dolls house of Leeds Castle, with eight 1930s and Tudor period rooms, all made entirely from hand-iced gingerbread. Leeds Castle is teaming up with the Biscuiteers hand-iced biscuit company to create the edible world of biscuitty delights which decorate the castle rooms for the festive season. Annual tickets cost £24 for adults and £16 for children and day tickets cost £19 for adults and £11 for children. Visit www.leeds-castle.com or call 01622 765400.
