The main feature on this Saturday night’s card will be the final of the Metro Mutro Cup for top grade S1 greyhounds over 540 metres.

From 18 starters last weekend, in three heats of six dogs, we are down to the last six and on paper it looks like being a quality final.

All three heats were won in impressive fashion.

Mountcashel Gift won heat one by four-and-a-half lengths, followed by Fernhill Fury who won by four-and-a-quarter lengths.

The third heat went to Lordsbury Mayo, who romped home by no less than six-and-a-quarter lengths. Their win times were 34.20, 34.83 and 34.46sec.

It would seem, therefore, that the final is at the mercy of Lordsbury Mayo. However, the word on the night was that Fernhill Fury would probably go off as favourite as he suffered from trouble in running while the other pair enjoyed a clear run.

Fury went off as an odds-on favourite in his heat at a short-looking 4-6. However his supporters had an early fright as the dog did not trap out in front, managing to exit the boxes in only fourth place.

His problems were compounded when he was bumped at the first bend and halfway, before taking up the lead around the third bend.

As I stated last week, he is a dog I have no hesitation in tipping to you.

This is a greyhound that has now won his last three races – one open race and two S1 events – and on that basis he should rightly hold a great chance now of making it a four-timer on Saturday.

The form followers will be aware his fastest-ever time of 33.79 compares favourably against the best the other heat winners are capable of.

Mountcashel Gift is a youngster who has only had eight races to date, and her best time has been 34.00, while Lordsbury Mayo, who is more experienced, has a quickest time of 34.16.

Supporters will be hoping Fury draws trap six in the final, which he seems to prefer over trap five, and with a level break the writing could be on the wall early.

The other three finalists, Juan Dog, Burgess Lad and Reuben Jay Cee, are not expected to win and have plenty to find with best-ever times of 34.24, 34.42 and 34.48 respectively.

It looks like whatever price Fernhill Fury goes off at will prove a bargain, but you need that bit of luck in running so let’s hope that he gets it.
