An off-duty police officer was injured after a suspected thief reportedly headbutted him.
The man was detained following a struggle in the incident in Swanley.
It is alleged the suspect stole eight cans of beer and was challenged by staff and the off-duty officer who produced his warrant card in the Co-op in the High Street on Tuesday at 8.30pm.
The suspect fled on foot but after being chased by the officer assisted by a member of the public he was restrained nearby.
Police say the officer was hurt and suffered a head injury when he was allegedly headbutted during a struggle.
The man, aged 36, from Swanley was taken into custody on suspicion of theft, assault on an emergency worker and public order offences.
He has been released under investigation.
