A LORRY driver miraculously escaped unhurt in a dramatic accident in Dartford.

His vehicle hit a roundabout in University Way at the junction with Joyce Green Lane. It then continued down an embankment, through a fence and ended up in a pond.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 4.30am yesterday were amazed to find the driver alive. One of the firemen, Paul Osborne, said: "From the first impact to where the lorry finished must have been in excess of 100 metres. I don't know how he survived.

"He is the luckiest man alive. The steering wheel was pinned tight against the driver's seat."

The driver managed to get out of the lorry and make his own way back up the embankment.
