An application has resurfaced to turn a derelict pub into a pizza takeaway four years after it was first refused.

Proposals to transform The George and Dragon Pub on London Road, Swanscombe, into a pizza delivery restaurant were first put forward in 2020.

Now, the same applicant has submitted a new request which would see the takeaway open between 10.30am and midnight and include limited seating at the front of the store and eight parking spaces at the back of the premises.

Previous plans were for a Domino's but it has not been confirmed if the franchise is part of the new proposal.

The new plan has already met with objections from neighbours.

One said: “No, no, no! How many times does this have to be refused and rejected?

“This area is fast becoming a tip. There are already numerous fast food takeaways within a few minutes walk including one that does pizzas. We do not need this and do not want it.”

Another added: “There is already a strain on Swanscombe with extra traffic because of the Galley Hill Road closure.

“Also how many takeaways does Swanscombe need? This will just lead to extra vehicles crowding up an already struggling road infrastructure.”

Another added: “We do not need another fast food premises.

“The London road has subsided and this will cause even more traffic entering Swanscombe. There is also a lack of parking facilities and the delivery lorry will be right on the corner, causing a hazard.”

Another neighbour said: “This is the 3rd time I have objected to this and I know a lot of people in the area are the same.

“We do not and never want a pizza place.”

The building, which has been empty for almost five years, is situated at the edge of the site of the Galley Hill Road cliff collapse last April.

The stretch of road between the High Street and Ebbsfleet Football Club’s Kufflink stadium has now been closed for a year forcing traffic onto unsuitable residential roads through Swanscombe and Greenhithe.

A previous application was refused in June 2020 as there was concern it would result in the loss of a community facility for non-community purposes, as well as fears the plans provided inadequate customer and staff parking.

An appeal was dismissed in October 2021 and a further application in September 2022 was withdrawn following feedback from the council and comments from Dartford Borough Council over whether Kent County Council and the Clinical Commissioning Group had been asked if they had an interest in retaining the site for community use, as well as insufficient evidence that the existing public house was not needed.
