After weeks of campaigning, voters have now decided who they want to represent them in parliament following the first December General Election since 1923.

There were four candidates on the ballot paper in Dartford.

Updates from Dartford to follow:

Gareth Johnson has been returned to Westminster after picking up 34,006 votes.

The Tory, who was first elected in 2010, has a majority of 19,846.

Labour's Sacha Gosine came second with 14,846, while the Lib Dem's Kyle Marsh was fourth with 3,735

The Green Party's Mark Lindop was fourth with 1,435

There were 280 rejected ballots.

An hour on from when results were expected, and a short delay, volunteers are beginning to slow down and waiting in silence. There's not long left.

Results are expected in soon. There's still some counting going on, but people are finishing quickly.

Labour candidate Sacha Gosine told us it was "disappointing" to see the exit polls and then see results coming in "match up" with them.

He said when campaigning the main issues which were brought up initially Brexit and Jeremy Corbyn, but changed to the NHS later on.

And we're back underway! Counting commences at Fairfield Leisure Centre as we approach the 3am predicted declaration time.

Volunteers counting the votes have taking a well-earned break.

Gareth Johnson has said Brexit was the biggest talking point when he was campaigning and canvassing in winter was a new challenge.

He said: "Everywhere I went people were very frustrated Brexit hadn't been delivered. People voted by 2/3 for it in Dartford. I felt frustrated, we all felt frustrated."

A total of 54,307 people turned out to vote in Dartford - which is 66.1%.

Fairfield Leisure Centre is slowly filling up, with around 30 non-staff here at the moment. Roughly two-and-a-half hours to go until the result is expected.

Council leader Jeremy Kite (Con) is one of the people here supporting Gareth Johnson.

Liberal Democrat Kyle Marsh was the first candidate at Fairfield Leisure Centre.

Speaking to the Dartford Messenger, he explained voters were most concerned about NHS rather than Brexit.

He said: "In Dartford the main issue was the NHS, even more so than Brexit. People were concerned about the future of our country and if our health service is secure."

The count has been underway for a couple of hours now. We've been told the result for the constiuency is expected at around 3am, but could be later as there have been "more voters than expected".
