Inside View with Charlton Athletic striker Paul Benson

I was the focus of plenty of headlines after Saturday’s draw and my two goals against Plymouth Argyle.
You expect that as a striker. When you put the ball in the back of the net, plenty of praise tends to come your way.
The downside is that if you don’t, people start asking a lot of questions instead!
I said earlier this season that that’s the life of a striker and you have to accept it, try to thrive on the pressure and make sure your name is in the papers for positive reasons as much as possible.
Of course, results are never down to just one player. Against Plymouth, for example, the lads put in a huge amount of commitment and it was great I managed to ensure that was rewarded by getting the equaliser in the last minute.
Two of my three goals for the club have come in the closing few minutes and that’s another important part of being an attacking player.
Players have to be completely focused for 90 minutes and if a defender gets tired, or has a momentary lapse, it’s your job to take advantage.
That’s why it’s important to get plenty of balls into the box. Not only does it suit my game, it puts defenders under constant pressure.
Obviously, I’m in the team primarily to score goals. But I’m also working hard to bring a bit more to the team outside the box as well.
That’s what the gaffer wants and it’s up to me to work hard at that.
We had the draw for the regional quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last weekend and we’re looking forward to going to face Southend United. Simon Francis and Alan McCormack certainly are because they left Roots Hall over the summer.
I won the League 2 play-off final with Dagenham & Redbridge in May and a few of the lads have been asking me what it was like to play at Wembley.
We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves but it’s an unbelievable experience.
It’s a wonderful day for players and fans, regardless of whether it’s a play-off final, the FA Cup final or the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and there is nothing wrong with using that dream as a target for us.
