Kent prisoner from Bexley who was beaten to death at HMP Belmarsh is named

A man who was beaten to death in prison has been named.

Sundeep Ghuman, from Bexley, was found with the injuries in HMP Belmarsh last Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police were called to the London prison at around 8pm and the 36-year-old was was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

He died the following day as a result of his injures.

A post-mortem gave the cause of death as head injury. His next of kin have been made aware.

Two men, both aged 28 and inmates at the prison, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Both were bailed pending further inquiries.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and will be led by the Met Police's detective chief inspector Richard Leonard.

He said: “We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident with the support of the prison and local officers.

"At this stage I am open minded concerning motive, but expect this to become clear as the investigation progresses.”
