A driver who is set to face charges in connection with the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants found in the back of a lorry wants to be extradited to the UK "as soon as possible".

The High Court in Dublin heard how Ronan Hughes, from Silverstream, Tyholland in County Monaghan wants to be surrendered to face his charges.

It comes after the bodies, which included ten teenagers and two 15-year-old boys, were found near the Dartford Crossing at an industrial estate in Grays, Essex, in October.

Earlier today the High Court rules the 40-year-old can be extradited to the UK to face 39 charges of manslaughter and an additional charge of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigation.

The lorry driver did not speak himself during the short hearing this morning, but Mr Justice Paul Burns said the order for his surrender will go ahead on Monday,

During a previous bail hearing in April the court heard how Hughes was "the ringleader and organiser" of the people-smuggling plot.

It also heard how the migrants were smuggled in commercial trailer owned and operated by Hughes, who was arrested are a European Arrest Warrant was issued.

On April 8 Maurice 'Mo' Robinson, of Craigavon in Northern Ireland, pleaded guilty to 39 counts of manslaughter at the Old Bailey in London.

The 25-year-old had already previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and acquiring criminal property in November.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

Hughes can appeal against the ruling to the Court Of Appeal and was remanded in custody for a further 15 days.

There have been multiple arrests throughout the investigation.
