A man has been jailed after being caught in Kent transporting millions of pounds worth of cannabis.

Curtis Turner was sentenced to four years in prison for possessing cannabis with intent to supply following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

The drugs were delivered in eight pallets to a trading estate in Swanley having arrived in the country from Spain. The cannabis weighed more than 236kgs and had a street value of up to £3.5 million.

The 33-year-old from Eltham was caught by Kent Police in a joint operation with the National Crime Agency when he moved the pallets to a lockup in Horton Kirby.

Data from his mobile phone showed that Turner had called a number of hire companies in an attempt to hire a van, before sourcing one in Brockley.

The vehicle was fitted with a tracking device which showed Turner went straight from the hire shop to Swanley. He arrived just before 3.30pm on January 21, 2015.

Only six of the pallets would fit in the van, but Turner told the warehouse operative that he wasn’t going far, and would be back to collect the other two.

Just after 4pm, he dropped the six pallets at a lockup in Horton Kirby, and then returned to collect the remaining two packages.

When Turner returned to the lockup, he was stopped by police and arrested. He was charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled substance.

Detective Constable James Crouch who investigated the case said: "This was a successful policing operation which has taken a huge amount of illegal drugs off the streets.

"Despite being caught red-handed Turner professed his innocence, claiming he was unaware he was transporting millions of pounds worth of cannabis. However when faced with an overwhelming amount of evidence, including analysis of Turner’s mobile phone, the jury found him guilty.

"Turner will now have several years to reflect on his actions."

He pleaded not guilty a jury found him unanimously guilty and last week he was jailed for four years.
