A motorist in Kent has the dubious honour of clocking up the highest speed caught on camera in either England or Wales over the last year... at a bone-shaking 149mph.

The driver - caught doing more than double the speed limit on the M25 at Swanley - was revealed following a Freedom of Information request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

It was the fastest speed clocked out of 39 police authorities who provided information for the year from last April.

The 149mph record was set at Swanley

IAM chief executive Simon best said: "149 miles per hour equates to nearly two-and-a-half miles in a minute.

"If anything goes wrong at that speed, you’re unlikely to walk away and you are a grave danger to the innocent road users around you.

"Speed limits are a limit. They are not a target to beat. Unfortunately this message has not got through to many motorists and it’s clear that efforts to make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink driving continue to fail."

He called for a sustained campaign by the government, motor industry and charities "to keep ramming home the message that excessive speed kills."

The motorist was clocked doing 149mph on the M25

He added that catching speeders at two or even three times the limit also shows the importance of keeping speed cameras at well-known black spots.

The guidelines to magistrates for speeding between 101 and 110mph are that drivers should be fined six points or disqualified for anything from seven to 56 days.

But it's not the first time a vehicle has done 149mph on Kent's roads.

A motorcyclist was banned from the road in 2011 after admitting doing wheelies and speeding across the M2 bridge at 149mph.
