A pair of senior dogs who have spent more than 100 days at a rescue centre are still waiting to find their forever homes.

Jack Russell terrier cross Poppy, 9, and crossbreed Misty, 12, have been at Battersea Dogs’ Brands Hatch base in West Kingsdown almost three times longer than the average pooch.

Staff at the centre believe their older age may be a reason why they’re struggling to find a new home.

The average stay for one of the charity’s dogs is 35 days.

Since being looked after by foster carers, both dogs have grown in confidence.

The inseparable pair enjoy “plenty of chin scratches” and can always be found sleeping together. Poppy is the more confident of the two and helps Misty come out of her shell.

Their ideal home would be somewhere with plenty of access to calming walking routes away from busy areas.

Once they have been helped to settle into new surroundings, they could potentially be left for short periods of time. They would need to be the only pets in their new home.

Ahmed Abdeldayem, centre manager at Brands Hatch said: “Sometimes older dogs like Poppy and Misty can be overlooked in favour of younger pups, but senior canines give just as much love and deserve as much care and attention as their younger counterparts.

“Older ladies Poppy and Misty are the best of friends and are looking for a quiet and cosy retirement home they can spend their golden years in.

“They may not be young pups anymore, but they both have a real love for life and are always up for scent-filled peaceful walks and some playtime.

“Often, although older dogs might not always need quite as much exercise, senior canines can be just as fun and playful.

“Like Poppy and Misty, older dogs are often fully house-trained and, as they are older and wiser, they usually know other training basics too so you don’t have to dedicate as much time getting them used to home life.
