Officers have now condemned motorists using their mobile phones behind the wheel following the collision near the Dartford Crossing on Wednesday.

Police were called at 12.31pm to reports of a five-vehicle crash on the A282 near junction 1B on the approach to the tunnels.

One person was taken to hospital and an obstruction caused by the incident caused delays.

Six drivers were caught using their mobile phones while passing the scene leading to "several near misses on the opposite carriageway", officers said.

Patrols from the Kent Police roads unit say they used body-worn video cameras to capture the six offending drivers.

Fines will now be sent to the registered keepers in the post and drivers may receive a court summons if deemed necessary, a force spokesman said.

Chief Inspector Craig West, head of the Kent Police roads policing unit, said: "Using a mobile phone, or any other handheld device at the wheel, is one of the five most common causes of a fatal collision.

"It is a very dangerous offence for which there is no excuse and we will always work to ensure an offending motorist is dealt with in a robust but proportionate manner.

"I encourage all motorists to adhere to the responsibilities placed on them by the Highway Code at all times."
