POLICE have closed down a suspected drugs den by using new powers for the first time.

Officers had to break down the door of the flat in Lynstead Court, Beckenham, which had been barricaded from inside.

Neighbours had complained for the past 18 months about disturbances in and around the flat. When police searched the flat, they found evidence of hard drug use but no actual drugs.

However, under new powers under the Anti Social Behaviour Act, officers were able to secure a closure order from Bromley magistrates on the grounds that regular disturbances had been reported and that drugs were probably being used at the flat.

The closure is aimed at driving away drug users who have blighted the lives of residents.
