Four fire engines were sent to a Boots store after a false alarm sparked concern.
Smoke was seen filling up the retailer in High Street, Dartford, just after 6pm last night.
What was first thought to be a fire turned out to be a security measure.
Spokesman for the fire service Sacha Taylor said: "The incident turned out to be a false alarm, and the smoke was caused by a smoke cloak that was activated accidentally on the premises.
"Crews used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke and left the scene at 6.58pm."
