An unauthorised Traveller encampment has been ordered to leave a playing field used by school children.

Around half a dozen caravans first pitched up on the greenspace in Oakfield Lane, Dartford earlier this week.

The field is used by pupils at neighbouring Wilmington School for Girls in Parsons Lane for PE lessons and sports days.

A parent from the school, who did not wish to be named, said: “Where are the girls supposed to go to do their outside PE and enjoy some fresh air and a run around?

“I’m sure there will be loads of rubbish left and the area will be out of bounds whilst it is cleaned up.”

Police confirmed to KentOnline they were called to the site on Monday (September 16) following reports of travellers parked on a field in Oakfield Lane.

Officers spoke with the landowners, Dartford council, and yesterday, issued the group with a direction to leave notice under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

Dartford council said the vehicles were told to leave by 9am today (Sept 18) and according to police they have now left.

Earlier this year KentOnline reported how fixed Gypsy and Traveller pitches will need to be expanded and green belt land released in Dartford to meet increased demand.

Councillor George Holt said the plan has been signed off and sufficient space allocated.

“As many residents will know, as per the local plan, there are already adequate traveller sites within the area,” he said. “We are keen to act as fast as possible when public space is taken advantage of.”

He added; “The area has been re-secured with the gate and new posts on the footpath.”
