Firefighters were called to a bedroom fire at a house in Rowan Crescent, Dartford at 9.30 last night.
It's believed the blaze was caused by a candle that had been left unattended and set fire to a mattress.
Two fire engines attended and crews wore breathing apparatus while using hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
To stop the flames from spreading, firefighters fixed a smoke curtain to the front door of the property, which reduces the amount of oxygen able to reach the fire.
The smoke curtain is a recent addition to KFRS' firefighting kit.
No casualties were reported.
If using candles in the home, the fire service recommends making sure they are fitted in a candle holder and placed on a non-flammable surface.
Don't leave a burning candle unattended and keep the, away from curtains, bedding, clothing and even plants, which could also catch fire.
Extinguish all candles before going to bed or out and make sure you have a working smoke alarm that is tested regularly.
