Eight engines were needed after a fire broke out at a recycling centre near Dartford.
Crews battled the blaze which started around midday in Pinden, near Longfield.
Eight fire engines, a bulk water carrier and a height vehicle were initially sent to the scene.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, using hose reel jets and compressed air foam to extinguish the flames.
People who live and work in the surrounding area of Green Street Green Road are being asked to close their windows and doors while firefighters continue to tackle the blaze.
The number of engines used by the fire service was reduced just after 5pm to six, as a height vehicle and two bulk water carriers continued to fight the flames at the industrial estate.
Crews were eventually sent home after extinguishing the blaze nine hours later at 9pm.
One woman who saw the plumes of smoke rushed to check on sheep she knew were in a nearby field.
She said: "I went to check the sheep, as I have my own and knew they'd be unrested, but they seemed fine."
No casualties have been reported.
