Bluewater has hilariously poked fun at Charlton manager Nathan Jones after he banned his players from Kent’s largest shopping centre.
Jones, known for his intense approach and headline-making interviews, revealed the strict list of “sacrifices” he expects from his squad as they aim for promotion in League One.
In an interview, the 51-year-old manager detailed how he expects total commitment from his squad for the next two months.
"Going into eight weeks of your life now, where you sacrifice everything,” he said.
"You're not shopping tomorrow. Not bowling. Your diet's good."
Jones made it clear that it’s not just the players who need to step up — he expects their families to make sacrifices too.
He added: "If your wife or your girlfriend wants to go shopping, wants to do that, they have to make the sacrifices."
"It’s a massive sacrifice for us — to achieve something — because you can’t now go to Bluewater, walking around high-fiving and going to Costa Coffee when you should be resting."
Jones' comments quickly sparked a reaction — and Bluewater didn’t waste any time getting in on the joke.
The Greenhithe shopping centre posted a light-hearted video on X, formerly Twitter, showing two security guards patrolling the centre with pictures of Charlton players' faces, pretending to be on the lookout for anyone breaking the manager’s rules.
In the video, one of the guards can be heard saying: "Okay, so if you see any of these lot, especially Gilbert, let the gaffer know on the radio."
As the security team moves through the shopping centre, the guards announce:
"Central entrance — clear."
"Sweet shop — clear."
"Costa Coffee — clear."
"Park right entrance — clear."
The video was captioned: "Nathan Jones, don't worry — we’ve got your back."
Jones is no stranger to bizarre and memorable comments. During his brief spell at Southampton in 2022, he famously explained his decision to take the job by saying: "I could have stayed in a mining community, been a PE teacher and had a nice life, married a nice Welsh girl. I don't.
I want to test myself on every level and that's nothing against Welsh women. I want to test myself."
And last year, Jones made headlines after a fiery 2-1 win over Derby when he accidentally swore live on the BBC.
He said: "We over-ran them, we f*****g... Sorry — we were aggressive in what we did and I'm really proud of the second-half performance."
Jones’ latest comments might have raised a few eyebrows, but it’s clear Bluewater has taken it all in good humour — even if Charlton’s players will have to give the shopping centre a wide berth for the next few weeks.
