People have been evacuated and a library closed after a suspected bomb was found on a building site in Crayford this morning.

Police were called to the site on Crayford Road just after 9am.

They then sealed the area off.

Crayford library and community centre was evacuated as were nearby residents.

It was soon discovered to be a Second World War artillery shell.

The shell was empty and did not pose a risk.

A Bexley council spokesman said: "It was all over fairly quickly.

"Police were called at 9am by the contractors working on the old Library building in Crayford High Street.

"The library and community centre were closed while emergency services were on site.

"The area was declared safe at 10.10am. The artillery shell was actually two empty shells.

"These were removed and taken away. The area was reopened."

Both the library and the community centre are due to open again at noon.
