A SWANLEY youngster almost lost an eye after being shot in the face by a ball-bearing gun during a horrific street attack.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the 12-year-old shot at as he walked along Hollytree Avenue in Swanley at about 4pm last Friday.

The youngster, who has not been named, was approached by a boy and girl, both around 12-years-old and both armed with ball-bearing handguns.

They asked their victim if he had any money or cigarettes and when he said no, he was shot in the face at close range.

The attack left him with severe swelling and bruising to his face and cornea.

Investigating officer Det Con Nigel Hughes said: "This once again shows how dangerous these weapons are, especially in the wrong hands.

"This was a reckless and dangerous attack, which has left the boy with a very serious injury to his eye.

"We are very concerned and would urge anyone who saw this attack, or recognises the descriptions of the boy and girl to contact us as soon as possible."

Det Con Hughes also put out a particular appeal to the parents of children who have ball-bearing guns.

He added: "We would urge them to talk to their offspring and ensure they are not using these guns in such an irresponsible and dangerous manner."

The attacker was white with dark brown hair, which was shaved short. He wore a T-shirt, dark trousers and trainers.

The girl was white, with dark brown shoulder length hair.
