Motorists are being warned of possible disruption around the town centre over the next nine months.
To ease nearby building work, all vehicles - apart from authorised goods vehicles - will be temporarily banned from the High Street, from its junction with Spital Street and Hythe Street to Bullace Lane.
The ban also applies to Lowfield Street, from its junction with High Street to Market Street, and Market Place, from its junction with High Street in a southerly direction for 11 metres.
The one-way system in Hythe Street is also being suspended, between its junction with the works compound near Suffolk Road and High Street, allowing authorised vehicles used by those working on the project to travel in both directions.
The order comes in to effect on Thursday, January, 28 with work expected to take place in three sections over nine months.
However, the order - made under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 - will remain in force for up to 18 months to be re-introduced if necessary.
