A young dancer who has excelled at college despite helping to care for her mum, who has a life-threatening brain tumour, has launched an ambitious plea to raise £14,000 to help her realise her dream of starring in the West End.
North West Kent College (NKWC) student Georgie Cox, 20, is working seven days a week at three different jobs as she aims to fund the £14,000 needed to enrol on a dance and musical theatre course at Performers College in Essex.
Although she has secured one of the 75 places up for grabs, there is no funding available to her and her parents cannot afford the fee.
In Georgie’s first year at college, her mum Maria was diagnosed with the brain tumour, which resulted in her providing home care as well as emotional support for her dad Peter and twin sister Charlotte.
Despite the devastating diagnosis, Georgie never missed a deadline and gained several distinctions for excellent work.
Her performances led to classmates voting her to be the representative for the dance department while she was also appointed as a student ambassador for the college.
Despite a promising start to her career, the 20-year-old believes her future could already be under threat because of the costs involved in going to dance college. She says Performers College gives her the best opportunity, offering her exposure to top talent agencies.
Georgie said: "Performing is the only thing I think about. The feeling I get in the studio, on stage, even when listening to a song is indescribable and I have never wanted to do anything else for as long as I can remember.
"Going to Performers College, I know I will get the highest level of training and become such a versatile performer that it will give me the best chance of becoming employable in such a hard and competitive industry.
"It breaks my heart that after all the years of pushing to be the best I can be, I can’t go to the college I worked all my life to get in to because of money.
"I need to raise £14,000 to cover my costs and the entirety of funds I can raise will go solely to my college tuition."
Lindsey O’Malley, NKWC assistant principal of Arts and Creative Industries, said Georgie showed an “incredible desire” to learn after they worked together closely when Georgie studied for her Diploma in Dance at the college’s Dartford campus in Oakfield Lane.
Georgie added: "North West Kent College gave me the confidence to excel in my career path into dance, and gaining funding for Performers College would be life-changing for me."
