Hextable charity We Are Beams supporting disabled children and their families

A charity which supports disabled children has still managed to help more than 450 families despite Covid restrictions.

Many families have not been able to access the usual support and respite care offered by We Are Beams, which is based in Hextable and marks its 25th anniversary this year.

However, since April, the charity has still managed to offer more than 500 overnight stays at its Dragon’s Retreat Respite Centre, giving families a much-needed rest.

The charity has also been able to deliver more than 160 gifts via volunteers throughout north Kent.

Caroline Brinkman, head of income generation at We Are Beams, said: “We have been so overwhelmed at the generosity from the public and organisations such as Bluewater and Dartford Deeds Not Words.

"It has been a very difficult year and these acts of kindness really do make a difference.”

Despite a very uncertain start to lockdown, the Beams team quickly adapted to the new challenges and became Covid secure.

Although traditional fundraising stopped overnight, Beams was able to offer other services in the community including working with Kent County Council to deliver PPE to 1,100 families and toys to 800 families.

The charity is continuing to raise £1.5 million to provide care services to more than 450 families in Kent.
