Charlton closed the gap on leaders Leeds United with a 1-0 win over Southend United at The Valley.

Phil Parkinson's side move to within four points of the top after a less than impressive performance, Deon Burton's 10th goal of the season proving the difference between the two sides.

A sluggish start from the Addicks was almost punished as returning keeper Rob Elliot had to be on hand to deny Lee Barnard from point blank range on 21 minutes.

Four minutes later a good run and inviting ball by Lloyd Sam from the right-hand side was met by Burton, who headed past Shrimpers keeper Steve Mildenhall.
