Charlton Athletic's new board have appointed former Gillingham manager Keith Peacock as caretaker manager in the wake of Phil Parkinson's dismissal.

Parkinson and his backroom staff were relieved of their duties after the club went five games without a win and lost ground in the League 1 promotion race.

Peacock (pictured), Charlton's record appearance holder - currently a club vice-president and ambassador for the Charlton Community Trust - will be assisted by development coach Damian Matthew.

Peacock played 591 times for the Addicks between 1962 and 1979 and has previously served the club as captain, reserve manager, scout and assistant manager.

He managed the Gills between 1981 and 1987, also enjoyed a spell in charge of Maidstone United, was a reserve coach at QPR and most recently worked at West Ham as an assistant manager.

A club statement also confirmed: "The process to find a new permanent manager has started."
