Charlton suffered the pain of losing a penalty shootout as they were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by League 1 side Leyton Orient at The Valley on Tuesday night.
The newly-promoted Addicks lost the shootout 4-3 after the first-round tie finished 1-1 after extra-time.
And their frustration was compounded when manager Chris Powell was sent from the touchline in the second half by referee Gavin Ward after disputing a decision that went against Cedric Evina (pictured by Keith Gillard).
Charlton took the lead after 28 minutes when Scott Wagstaff's shot went via a deflection off Gary Sayer, but Orient drew level in the dying moments of the half when Mathieu Baudry headed home a corner.
Orient then wasted a great opportunity to take the lead four minutes after the restart when Lawrie Wilson fouled former Addick David Mooney in the area, but Mooney thumped the resulting penalty against the bar.
At the other end Danny Green was twice denied by the woodwork to send the tie into extra-time, which failed to separate the two sides, and so penalties were necessary.
Addicks skipper Johnnie Jackson saw his opening effort saved and Wilson hit the bar, with Orient netting their first two to take early charge.
The next three Addicks efforts, by Green, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Bradley Pritchard were all converted but the O's booked their place in the next round with two more successful spot kicks.
