Charlton moved level on points with League 1 leaders Sheffield United after seeing off 10-man Exeter at The Valley on Saturday.
The Addicks, who dropped two points at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday, made no mistake thanks to goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips (pictured) and Dale Stephens in each half.
The game's main talking point came after 15 minutes, however. Daniel Nardiello thought he had given Exeter the lead when he slid in to convert after Ben Harner parried out Rowan Vine's shot.
But the assistant referee decided that the ball had not crossed the line by the time Harner got back.
Nardiello's protests, however, saw him sent-off for foul and abusive language toward the assistant referee and the visitors had to play with 10 men for 72 minutes.
Charlton went ahead two minutes before half-time when Wright-Phillips exchanged passes with Paul Hayes to score his fifth goal of the season.
After the break, Charlton found the second goal hard to come by but they eventually made the game safe when Stephens slotted in after Wright-Phillips pulled the ball back.
