Two first-half penalties from Johnnie Jackson gave Charlton a 2-1 win over Milton Keynes Dons at The Valley on Tuesday night.
But Charlton needed a brilliant 37th-minute save by Ben Hamer from Alan Smith to avoid falling behind before the game's turning point arrived seven minutes later.
Dons' centre-half Gary MacKenzie was shown a straight red card after head butting Yann Kermorgant in the area and Jackson fired home the resulting spot kick.
Then, a minute later, Smith fouled Danny Green in the area and Jackson again despatched the penalty without any fuss.
Charlton, however, looked nervy in the second half, especially after Dean Bowditch pulled a late goal back, but the Addicks managed to hang on to extend their lead at the top of npower League 1 to eight points.
