Charlton suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday as they lost 2-0 at home to Preston North End in the Carling Cup.
Danny Mayor scored one goal and created another as Preston deservedly booked a trip to Southampton in the third round.
Darel Russell opened the scoring on 11 minutes, driving in a rebound from 12 yards after Mayor's shot was blocked.
Teenage winger Mayor's low 67th-minute shot from 25 yards then sealed the win for North End .
Charlton, who made 11 changes from the side which beat Exeter City 2-0 on Saturday, had a Jason Euell effort ruled out for offside in stoppage time.
