Charlton were denied a place in the League 1 play-off final at Wembley after a penalty shoot-out defeat against Swindon at The Valley on Monday night.

Addicks skipper Nicky Bailey missed the decisive spot-kick - the only penalty which was not converted - after Charlton had overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit with a 2-1 win on the night.

One-time Folkestone and Margate goalkeeper Phil Smith came on for Swindon inside a minute after first choice stopper David Lucas suffered a shoulder injury.

Charlton went 1-0 up shortly before the half-hour when Simon Ferry diverted a corner into his own net after Smith had failed to clear his lines and it was 2-0 in first-half injury time when Kyel Reid cut back for David Mooney to slam home from just inside the area.

The Addicks were firmly in the driving seat when Swindon saw skipper Gordon Greer sent-off for a high tackle on Deon Burton on 65 minutes, however just nine minutes later Danny Ward prodded home to bring the 10-men level on aggregate.

Smith denied Bailey, Mooney and Burton before Miguel Llera was sent-off after pulling down Charlie Austin.

In extra-time Scott Wagstaff clipped a post and Smith superbly denied Nicky Forster but could do nothing about Frazer Richardson's pile-driver which hit the post.

However after a goalless extra-time, penalties were needed to decide the outcome and Bailey blasted Charlton's second kick high and wide and Swindon netted all of their spot-kicks to seal a date at Wembley on May 29.
